The issue surrounding Chick-Fil-A has roused passions on both sides of the debate about the values of Tolerance and equality in our society. Each of us has our private opinions on the matter such as CEO President Dan Cathy, Rick Santorum former GOP Presidential Canadate and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R), who is coordinating an effort to boost the chain’s sales on Wednesday, and particularly Boston and Chicago mayors Thomas Menino and Rahm Emanuel who have made clear that the restaurants are not welcome in their cities, even if they may lack the actual power to stop the chain from expanding there.
All these individuals have a right to do what they are doing. What they don’t have a right to do is to hide their true agenda. According to Chick-Fil-A web site “The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our Restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect –regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender.” While this statement from Chick-Fil-A sounds inclusive one has to wonder than is Dan Cathy truly representing the company in his none support of Gay Marriage.
Fox News talk show host and former GOP contender Mike Huckabee, and Rick Santorum ’s actions are somewhat juvenile. They seem to be more interested in hawking Huckabee’s Fox Cable Talk Show, and Santorum’s political career than promoting tolerance and inclusion. Their involvement appears to be primarily self-promotional.
“The goal is simple: Let’s affirm a business that operates on Christian principles and whose executives are willing to take a stand for the Godly values we espouse by simply showing up and eating at Chick-fil-A,” Huckabee said on his website. Huckabee wants to promote the idea that Christians don’t support Gay Marriage that is categorically untrue.
The Rainbow Sash Movement applauds Boston and Chicago mayors Thomas Menino and Rahm Emanuel, also NY City Council Speaker Christine Quinn for having the courage of political leadership of contrasting their cities values of Tolerance, inclusiveness and fairness over Chick-Fil-A., CEO’s bigoted positions.
Chick-Fil-A would not like any person representing their position, and that includes Dan Cathy, Mike Huckabee, or Rick Santorum. If the company wants to promote its values within a corporate culture of transparency the company should be crystal clear about those values. If the CEO of the Corporation is coming out against Gay Marriage, and the company’s web page is indicating it wishes to treat everyone with dignity, respect and indicating to news sites that the company wants to remain neutral, we have a problem with communication. On the surface it would appear the company is speaking out of both sides of its mouth which flies in the face of its corporate claim to promote a culture of ethics. What is Chick-Fil-A’s true agenda?
Joe Murray, Executive Director of the Rainbow Sash Movement said “It is time for the Board of Directors to either agree with its CEO in this matter, or to take disciplinary action against him for misrepresenting the Chick-Fil-A, anything less would be disingenuous at best.”
