The Rainbow Sash Movement takes time during this wonderful Christmas season to remember what this season is all about. It is not about gifts that we share with each other, nor is about the many parties we give during the season. The Christ Child that was born in poverty and found no welcome in any home would be the herald of hope in our world. Christmas is about inclusion and not exclusion.
The season is a time to be thankful for the many wonderful gay and straight Catholics who take the time to truly minister to our community without much fanfare. Organizations such Dignity Inc., New Ways Ministry, and the various Archdiocesan Gay and Lesbian Outreach Ministries that touch the soul of compassion and care within our Catholic Community. These organizations tirelessly point the way to a Church that could be. They challenge the Church leadership to look deeper within its own Social Justice Tradition when addressing the Social Justice concerns of the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender community.
While we recognize the harm that our Church leadership imposes on the Gay and Lesbian Community with each new anti-gay proclamation, we also recognize that the voice of challenge to these homophobic positions continues to get louder within the Church because of the daring, courage and creativity of these organizations to light the candle of hope instead of just throwing the baby out with the water.
These organizations continue to challenge us to see and stand with the many faces of poverty in our own community, and to remind the broader Gay and Lesbian Community not to forget the poor among us.
The Rainbow Sash Movement Board of Directors wishes all a Christmas filled with joy and hope that is embodied in the Christ child’s birth and safety as you travel to be with loved ones during this sacred season.
Merry Christmas to one and all!
