Rainbow Sash Movement responds to the Archdiocese of New York Comments on the Gay Marriage Debate Challenge

The Rainbow Sash Movement responds to the Archdiocese of New York statement concerning the debate challenge of Joe Murray our Executive Director, to Archbishop Dolan to engage in a debate on Gay Marriage at any Catholic University in the US.

Responding to that challenge Kate Monaghan, assistant communications director for the New York Archdiocese apparently does not understand the difference between a debate and a respectful dialogue process. This is an example of Archbishop Dolan not listening to what is being said. We believe this is why he is so clueless about what is causing the lack of Unity in the Catholic Church today. The debate on Gay Marriage could be a teaching moment for the Archbishop.

Managhan claims the Rainbow Sash Movement is not interested in ‘a mature exchange of ideas’, but by employing the following, stating that Archbishop Dolan is an ‘accomplice’ in ‘soul murder,’ ‘more comfortable taking cheap shots from his ivory tower,‘ lacks courage’ and will likely meet the request with ‘arrogance,’ you run contrary to the very nature of your appeal for civil, respectful dialogue.” She further inferred that Archbishop Dolan has not made his decision on the challenge.

Debating is a discussion, as of a public question in an assembly, involving opposing viewpoints: A dialogue is an exchange of ideas or opinions on a particular issue such as Gay Marriage, with a view to reaching an amicable agreement or settlement. Dolan has shown by his previous mean spirited comments on Gay Marriage that he is not interested in a respectful dialogue process that is why we are now calling for a debate.

The Rainbow Sash Movement stands by it opinion that Archbishop Dolan is part of the problem when it comes to the clergy sexual abuse scandal. He and his brother bishops have sought to cover-up their complicity in this matter by the same shell game he is engaging with the Rainbow Sash Movement over the Gay Marriage debate.

Joe Murray once again challenges Archbishop Dolan to a public debate on Gay Marriage, and calls on the Archbishop to have the courage of his convictions. Catholic Tradition as expressed by the “Sense of the Faithful” is  the movement of the Holy Spirit, and in our opinion calls on  Archbishop Dolan to be responsible for his dehumanizing comments about the Gay and Lesbian Community on the issue of Gay Marriage.
