Rainbow Sash Movement Endorses the Associaton of Gay & Lesbian Ministries Conference

The Rainbow Sash Movement wishes to congratulate the Catholic Association of Gay & Lesbian Ministries (CALGM) on their 2011 conference to be held next week in Albany, New York – with key Catholics from Oakland to San Diego playing important roles. Clearly the CALGM has been able to out maneuver all its critics within the fundamentalist wing of the Catholic Church. This is happening in no small degree because of the support of Cardinal Francis George of Chicago previous president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops who appears to focus on charity over legalism. Chicago has one of the largest CALGM chapters in the country.

We are especially glad to see that one of the workshops deals with “Welcoming Parishes” this is very much in the tradition of the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin. Parishes such as San Francisco’s Most Holy Redeemer Church and Chicago’s Our Lady of Mt Carmel are placing the spotlight on homophobia, and have been very instrumental the support of this conference.

Additionally, we are over joyed that our associates in CALGM have finally decided to continue our work in unraveling the systemic fabric of homophobia that is so visibly present in the Church, and opposing gay stereotypes which is the driving force behind such homophobia resulting in violence.

Finally, we are impressed with the fact that CALGM has decided to challenge the present understanding of Chastity as stated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1994 #2337 “Sexuality, in which man’s belonging to the bodily and biological world is expressed, becomes personal and truly human when it is integrated into the relationship of one person to another, in the complete and lifelong mutual gift of a man and a woman. The virtue of chastity therefore involves the integrity of the person and the integrality of the gift.”

The Rainbow Sash Movement is in full agreement with CALGM stand as stated on their web site that Chastity means the successful integration of sexuality within the person and thus the inner unity of man in his bodily and spiritual being.”
