For Immediate Release
The Rainbow Sash Movement is a Gay/Lesbian Catholic organization, we are challenging the Catholic League ‘s President Bill Donohue to clarify his statement ““We find no evidence of any bigotry on the part of Rep. Michele Bachmann,” Catholic News Agency quoted Bill Donohue, president of the fundamentalist civil rights organization the Catholic League, as saying Friday. Donohue, however, also said it was “regrettable that there are still strains of anti-Catholicism in some Protestant circles.”
The Catholic League and its President Phil Donoghue must be challenged in their objectivity concerning Michele Bachmann’s membership, in the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stillwater which supports an anti Papist position. Nowhere does she retract the virulent anti-Catholic bigotry of her previous Church, to say or infer anything else smacks of political posturing on the part of the Catholic League.
Michelle Bachmann only changed her religious affiliation when she became a serious presidential Candidate. Bachmann’s former church came under fire during a 2006 debate, when she listed her affiliation on her campaign site for Congress. The question that can be reasonably asked is why did it take from 2006 till the present to leave her former Church. Even more importantly, why did she not publicly condemn the anti-Catholic direction in her Church?
Remember Evangelical pastor, John Hagee, who spent a career preaching and writing that the Catholic Church is the “whore of Babylon” as found in the Book of Revelations. Understandably, Catholics find this rant offensive. What was Mr. Donoghue’s response to this the phrase “whore of Babylon” he said it is not “synonymous with the Catholic Church.” He intended it only to refer to “the Crusades and the Inquisition” and that identification of Catholicism with “the apostate church” (Matt. 24:10-12) and the “great whore” (Rev. 17:1ff.) constitutes “a rhetorical device long employed in anti-Catholic literature and commentary.”
The League has a long history for making outrageous statements concerning many controversial issues. Remember it led the attacks on President Obama for the views expressed by Rev. Jeremiah Wright and, let’s not forget the Carnival that took place at Notre Dame University over the first African American President giving a commencement speech to its 2010 graduating class.
We call on the Catholic League to join the Rainbow Sash Movement in publically condemning anti Catholic bigotry wherever it raises its ugly head, and this includes with Michelle Bachmann, and her Tea Party supporters.
