An Open Letter to the Catholic Bishops of Illinois

A Loving Home is the Child's best interest

On June 1, 2011 Civil Unions came into effect for the state of Illinois. As a result of this some among you have opted to either remove yourselves from the Illinois Adoption/Foster Care Program, or take a wait and see position.

It is our hope that you will not follow in the footsteps of either the Archdiocese of Boston, or the Archdiocese of Washington DC in pitting Dogma against the needs of orphans. On contrary, we believe that both the New York Catholic Conference and the Illinois Catholic Conference are capable of arriving at a different conclusion if you would only open yourselves up to communication, and dialogue.

Instead of engaging the attempted passage of legislation such as SB1123 which was defeated, you could have taken the road of direct dialogue with those whose minds and hearts you wish to change. Rather you went to the courts, and media to promote your agenda. In our opinion this was not a prudent course of action since it was not productive.

I have reached out privately to some among you only to be met with a dismissive attitude. As many of you know we are an international organization of Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender Catholics. Our two goals is to attempt to facilitate first communication, and then serious dialogue on this most serious issue.

Our first priority is with the children that will be affected by your actions. I am sending this open letter in the hopes that a pathway of dialogue can be brokered which will respect the differences of opinion, and not attack them.

I have attempted private communication, but to no avail; prudence dictates that I now write this open letter.

If you wish to communicate with us we can be reached at sashmovement@aol.com.

Sincerely,

Joe Murray
